Terms of Use

Effective: October 20, 2026 · Version 1.1 (beta)

These terms govern your use of COHORT — the web application at app.cohort.study and the related websites and services (together, the “Service”), operated by COHORT (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

The short version: COHORT is an early-beta self-experimentation tool, not a medical service. Nothing in it is medical advice. You are responsible for what you do with your body. Your data stays yours. Features may break while we’re in beta. Be sensible, talk to your doctor, and don’t abuse the Service.

1. Who may use COHORT

You must be at least 18 years old and legally capable of entering into these terms. During the beta, access is by personal invitation; your account is for you alone and may not be shared, transferred, or resold.

2. What COHORT is — and is not

COHORT is a tool for structured self-experimentation: it helps you organize health data you choose to provide, design and track n-of-1 experiments, and review published research. It is provided for informational and educational purposes only.

COHORT is not a medical service. Nothing in the Service — including evidence summaries, experiment templates, protocols, reference ranges, safety checks, cohort comparisons, reminders, or AI-generated content — is medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and nothing creates a doctor–patient relationship. The Service is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, manage, or prevent any disease.

Always consult a qualified physician before starting, changing, or stopping any supplement, medication, diet, exercise regimen, or other health intervention — and before acting on anything you see in COHORT. COHORT is not offered to anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant or start breastfeeding while you use COHORT, stop any experiment you are running. If you have a medical condition or take prescription medication, do not run experiments without your doctor’s supervision. Never disregard professional medical advice, or delay seeking it, because of something in COHORT. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

3. Your responsibility & assumption of risk

You design and run your own experiments. You alone decide what to do with your body, and you accept the risks of those decisions. Self-experimentation with supplements, diets, and other interventions carries inherent risks, including serious ones. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you assume all risks arising from your use of the Service, and you release us from any claims relating to your health decisions and their outcomes.

4. Beta status

The Service is an early-stage beta (an MVP). Features may break, change, or be removed without notice; data may be lost despite our efforts; evidence results may be incomplete or contain errors; AI-generated content may be wrong; and cohort comparisons are based on a very small group with no statistical validity at this stage. We may suspend or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. The beta is currently free; if that changes, we will tell you clearly beforehand.

5. Your account

Keep your credentials confidential — you are responsible for activity under your account. Provide accurate information, keep your email current (it is how we reach you), and tell us promptly at notifications@cohort.study if you suspect unauthorized access.

6. Your content & data

The health data, files, notes, and other content you add to COHORT remain yours. You grant us the limited license needed to host, process, and display that content back to you and to operate the features you use (including sending it to our processors — for example, AI providers for features you invoke). How we handle personal data, including your rights to export and delete it, is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

Sharing is opt-in: nothing you add is visible to others unless you explicitly publish it (for example, a share page for one experiment). If you choose to contribute outcomes to community/cohort features as they roll out, contributions are anonymized and aggregated, and you control what you contribute.

You are responsible for the content you add: only upload what you have the right to upload, and do not add another person’s health data without their clear permission.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • attempt to access accounts, data, or systems that are not yours, or probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service;
  • scrape, harvest, or bulk-extract content or data from the Service;
  • reverse engineer, copy, resell, or provide the Service to third parties;
  • use the AI features to generate content that is unlawful or harmful, or to attempt to extract other members’ information;
  • interfere with the operation of the Service (rate abuse, malware, denial of service);
  • impersonate others or misrepresent your affiliation; or
  • use the Service in violation of applicable law.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

8. Intellectual property

The Service — its software, design, text, and branding — is owned by us or our licensors and protected by law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for its intended purpose during the time you have an account. Feedback you send us may be used to improve the Service without obligation to you. Third-party content referenced in the Service (e.g., published research) belongs to its respective owners.

9. Third-party services

The Service integrates third parties — for example hosting and database providers, AI providers, email delivery, transcript services, and device platforms you choose to connect (such as Whoop). Their availability is outside our control, and connecting your accounts with them is subject to their own terms. Links to external sites (including studies and references) are provided for convenience; we are not responsible for their content.

10. Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability, and non-infringement — to the maximum extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that any content in it (including AI output and evidence summaries) is accurate or complete.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we and our operators, contributors, and suppliers are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill — and, without limiting section 3, not for any health outcomes, injuries, or damages arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service or reliance on any content in it. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of CHF 100 or the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded (such as for intent or gross negligence).

12. Indemnification

You will indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your use of the Service in violation of these terms, or your violation of law or third-party rights.

13. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time (Settings → Privacy → Delete account — deletion is permanent). We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service; where reasonable, we will give you notice so you can export your data. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including 3, 6, 8, and 10–15) survive.

14. Changes to these terms

We will update these terms as the product matures and note the effective date and version above. For material changes we will notify you in-app or by email and, where appropriate, ask you to re-accept. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.

15. Governing law & final provisions

These terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland, excluding its conflict-of-law rules; the courts at our seat have exclusive jurisdiction, unless mandatory consumer law gives you a different forum. If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
